How a sawmill gearbox wears
Shock loading is the main enemy. When a log hits the saw or a feed roll jams, the force passes through the gearbox, and over time it works the bearings loose in their bores. Dust and sawdust find their way past worn seals and into the oil. A box in that condition can run for a while, then fail all at once. Oil that smells burnt, a new noise, a shaft that moves in and out and metal in the drain plug are the usual warnings, and a photo of any of them helps us read the failure before the box arrives.
Gear makers publish standards for how gears are rated and rebuilt; the American Gear Manufacturers Association is their trade association.
What a rebuild involves
We have rebuilt gearboxes for the mining industry, saw mills, power companies and the printing industry. The box is opened, each part is inspected, and worn bores, seal areas and shaft journals are repaired, often with metal spray followed by machining. Housings and bores can be bored back to size with align boring, which keeps the shafts on one line.
