Nevada generates electricity from heat in the ground, and the machines in those plants spend their lives in hot fluid that carries dissolved minerals. The Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns counts 51 electric power generation establishments in Nevada, of every type, with 6 in Washoe County and 4 each in Carson City, Lyon and Churchill counties.

I have used Wolf Machine several times over the past few years for fabricating and repair of parts on my ultralight aircraft. [...] These guys are great to deal with. I wouldn't take my projects anywhere else.

What hot, mineral-rich fluid does to a machine

Geothermal fluid is hot and carries dissolved minerals. Those minerals can build up as scale on surfaces and can attack metal that sits in them. A pump or turbine that runs in these conditions wears at its shaft, its seal areas and its bearing seats, and scale can change the way a rotating part runs.

Because a shaft that runs out of true damages everything around it, the first checks on a pump or turbine shaft are usually straightness and the condition of each journal. Our runout (TIR) glossary entry explains the measurement.

How our work applies

Our list for a geothermal power plant reads: shaft, turbine, pump and related parts repair. In practice that means a shaft journal that has worn or scored gets built up by metal spray or welding and machined back to size; a damaged part is checked for cracks with Magnaflux inspection; and a part that cannot be repaired is made new from a drawing or the worn original. Details are on the pump, shaft and turbine repair page.

About the county numbers

The 51 electric power generation establishments in Nevada include every type of generation, not only geothermal, so the count shows the size of the power sector, not the number of geothermal plants. The table above lists each county.
