A press is a set of rollers that have to turn in step, and the printing industry has a real presence in Northern Nevada: the Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns counts 47 printing establishments with 1,009 employees in Washoe County and 193 across Nevada. A roller that wobbles, a journal worn out of round or a gearbox that has lost its fit shows up on the page as a defect.

Why roller work is about truth

Printing needs a roller to meet its neighbors along its whole length. If the shaft is bent, or a journal is worn eccentric, the roller does not run true. Engineers call that error runout: the amount a surface moves off the axis as it turns. The runout (TIR) glossary entry explains how it is measured.

Roller work starts with the shaft. Journals are the surfaces that sit in the bearings, and if they are worn they can be built up and machined round again.

Our work for printing

Our list for the printing industry reads: roller and shaft repair and new machine parts, plus gearbox rebuilds, which also cover printers. In practice a roller comes in, the shaft is checked and repaired or replaced, the journals and keyways are machined to fit, and the new or repaired part goes back to the press. See the rollers and shafts page, and shafts, threads and keyways for the machining itself.

A gearbox rebuild is done on any brand or size, which matters on presses that have been running for decades.

A mature press is hard to replace

Older presses often have parts that are no longer sold. We make parts from your specifications, drawings or samples, so the old part itself can serve as the pattern. Our note on making a part that is no longer made goes into it.

What to send

Send the roller or shaft, or photos of it with the length and the journal diameters, the press make and model and a drawing if you have one. Attach them to the quote request or call (775) 359-5570, Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
