A gearbox rarely fails all at once. A bearing seat wears, the bearing creeps, the gears lose their mesh and the noise starts. Gearbox rebuilding is one of the things we specialize in, and the work we list for it comes from mining, sawmills, power companies and the printing industry.
At a glance
- Gearbox repair, any brand or size
- Housing bores and bearing seats rebuilt to size
- Shafts, keyways and seal surfaces repaired
- Balancing arranged with an outside shop after machining
I have used Wolf Machine several times over the past few years for fabricating and repair of parts on my ultralight aircraft. [...] These guys are great to deal with. I wouldn't take my projects anywhere else.
Who sends us gearboxes
Our own list reads "Gear Box Rebuild: Mining Industry, Saw Mills, Power Companies and the Printing Industry." Those are plants where a gearbox runs for long hours under load, and where a failed one stops a line. The rebuild is aimed at getting the unit back to the fits it was built with.
Where a gearbox usually wears
The case does most of the damage to the rest of the box. When a bearing bore in the housing wears oversize, the bearing moves, the shaft shifts, and the gears run out of mesh. When a seal surface on a shaft is grooved, oil leaks out and dirt gets in. Rebuilding the gears alone will not hold if the housing underneath them is out of size.
For that reason the housing and shafts get as much attention as the gears. A worn bore can be built up by metal spray, a sleeve or weld and then machined back, and a boring job across several bores uses align boring so the shafts line up again.
Balancing after machining
Rotating parts such as shafts and rotors sometimes need balancing once the machining is done. That step is arranged with an outside balancing shop after machining, and we coordinate it as part of the job.
Why a rebuild beats waiting for a new box
Gearboxes are often built for one machine or one line, and a replacement for an older unit can be hard to find. A rebuild keeps the box you have, with its mounting, its ratio and its fit on the driven equipment. Send the nameplate details and a few photos, and we will tell you what we see in the housing and the shafts before anything is taken apart.
How to start
Send the brand and model if you have them, the symptoms (noise, heat, leaks, metal in the oil) and photos of the housing and the nameplate. The step-by-step of a rebuild is in our guide a gearbox rebuild: what to expect. To talk it through, call (775) 359-5570 during shop hours.

- Worn fits rebuilt by metal spray, sleeve or weld, then machined back to size
- Reassembly with new bearings and seals
Typical parts
- Mine and mill drive gearboxes
- Sawmill gearboxes
