Pump, shaft and turbine repair for plants and utilities

We repair pump shafts, turbine shafts and related parts, and we fabricate new pump parts for plants and water and power companies. The work is mostly rebuilding worn journals, fits and housings so the rotating assembly runs true again.

A pump or turbine is a shaft with things bolted to it: bearings, a seal, an impeller or a rotor. Wear shows up at the places where those parts meet the shaft and the casing. Our services list includes shaft, turbine and pump repair for a geothermal power plant, and pump repair and fabrication for water and power companies.

At a glance

  • Shaft, turbine and pump parts repaired
  • Pump repair and fabrication for water and power companies
  • Journals and seal areas rebuilt by metal spray
  • Balancing arranged with an outside shop after machining

I have used Wolf Machine several times over the past few years for fabricating and repair of parts on my ultralight aircraft. [...] These guys are great to deal with. I wouldn't take my projects anywhere else.

Plants where a stopped pump hurts

Pumps and turbines in a geothermal plant or a water utility run for long hours, and a worn one is hard to replace on short notice, especially an older model. Repairing the shaft and fits gives the plant the same pump back instead of waiting on a new one.

That is the situation behind two kinds of work we do: shaft, turbine, pump and related parts repair for a geothermal power plant, and pump repair and fabrication for water and power companies.

How a worn shaft is brought back

A journal worn under a bearing or a groove cut by a packing or seal is built up, then turned to size. Metal spray suits these surfaces well because it adds metal without putting weld heat into a long, slender shaft. Stainless and bronze parts get the same attention to fit as steel ones.

Before a costly shaft is rebuilt, a Magnaflux check on magnetic shafts rules out cracks at keyways and shoulders. When a shaft is not worth saving, a new one is machined from the old part or a drawing.

Balancing

Pump impellers and turbine rotors turn fast, so balance matters after machining. We arrange that with an outside balancing shop once the machining is finished.

Matching the original fit

The aim on every pump or turbine part is the fit the machine was built with: the right diameter under the bearing, the right seat for the impeller, the right clearance at the wear ring. Bring the worn part and any part of the old drawing you still have, and the sizes can be taken from the part and from the mating pieces.

What to send

The pump or turbine type, the part name, the shaft material if known, and photos of the worn areas. A drawing helps, but a worn sample is enough. Call (775) 359-5570 Monday to Friday, or attach the details to the quote request.

Sources

Where pumps and turbines wear

  • Shaft journals under the bearings
  • Sleeve and seal areas that groove
  • Impeller seats and keyways
  • Wear ring fits in the casing
  • Bearing housings that have gone oversize

Typical parts

  • Pump shafts and sleeves
  • Turbine shafts
  • Impeller seats and wear ring fits
  • Bearing housings and end covers

How to send us the job

Send a drawing (PDF, DWG, DXF, STEP or IGES), a sketch with sizes, or photos of the part with a tape or scale in the shot. A sample works too: bring it to the shop.
