Metal fabrication in Reno: machines, fixtures, chutes, tanks and strainers

Metal fabrication is building a part or assembly from steel, stainless, aluminum or plastic stock by cutting, fitting, welding and machining. We do machine fabrication at our Reno shop, from automated machines and fixtures to chutes, custom tanks, strainers and one-off assemblies, with machining where it matters.

A fabricator starts with stock rather than a casting. A plate becomes a base, tube becomes a stand, and the pieces are cut, fitted and welded into a single assembly. Because Wolf Machine is also a machine shop, the bores, faces and fits on a fabricated part can be cut right after welding, in the same place.

At a glance

  • Machine fabrication, automated machines and fixtures
  • Built from plate, tube and sheet, cut, fitted and welded
  • Machined after welding where fits matter
  • Metal and plastic chutes for cement and mining work

I have used Wolf Machine several times over the past few years for fabricating and repair of parts on my ultralight aircraft. [...] These guys are great to deal with. I wouldn't take my projects anywhere else.

What does a fabrication job look like?

The photo above shows a gold wheel, a large tilted dish with a spiral liner, a spray bar and a drain, set on a stand made from square tube. It is a good example of fabrication: the dish, the stand and the plumbing are separate pieces that have to work as one assembly.

Our gallery also shows a custom welded steel tank and perforated strainers. The same approach covers the rest of the work: cut the stock, fit it up square, weld it, and machine the places that must be exact.

Chutes, tanks and strainers

We make metal and plastic chutes for the cement and mining industries. Chutes carry bulk material, so they need the right shape and a lining or wear surface that holds up. Tanks are welded from plate or sheet, with ports and flanges machined where connections attach. Strainers and baskets are built from perforated material.

For the strainer and tank side, see the page on strainers, baskets and tanks.

Why fabrication and machining in one shop help

Welding heat moves metal. If a bore or a face has to be exact, it is cut more reliably after the welding is done, on the finished assembly. Having both processes under one roof means a fabricated base can go straight to a mill or lathe, with the machinist working to the finished part rather than guessing at how it will move.

Welding is covered in more depth on the welding page, and stainless work on the stainless steel welding page. Fixtures for repeat assemblies are covered under automated machines and fixtures.

Getting a fabrication quote

A drawing is ideal. A sketch with the overall dimensions, the material, the quantity and a note on where it will be used is enough to start. If you are replacing an existing chute or tank, send photos of it in place. Attach everything to the quote request, or call (775) 359-5570, Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Metal fabrication questions

Still have a question? Call (775) 359-5570, Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

What materials does the shop fabricate in?

Steel and steel alloys, stainless steel, aluminum and plastics are the common choices, and we are capable of, but not limited to, those.

Can a fabricated part be machined after welding?

Yes. Bores, faces and fits can be cut on the finished weldment so they are exact.

Do I need a drawing?

A drawing helps, but a sketch with dimensions, or the existing part, is enough for the shop to begin.
