A cylinder leaks, drifts or pushes crooked because one of a few parts has worn or bent: the rod, the gland, the tube or the eye that takes the pin. Hydraulic repair is one of our specialties: we repair hydraulic cylinders or machine new parts for them.

At a glance

  • Repair worn cylinder parts
  • Machine new parts when repair does not make sense
  • Rods, glands, pistons and pin bores
  • Photos and measurements are enough to start

Love working with these guys, and gal. Great customer service and knowledgeable skill base. They have helped with many big projects and have always pulled though when our machines went down.

Reading the damage

A cylinder tells you where it hurts. A scored rod shreds the rod seal and leaks oil down the shaft. A bent rod binds in the gland and wears one side of it. An oval pin bore at the clevis lets the cylinder shift on its pin and loads the rod sideways. Finding which one it is saves paying to fix the wrong part.

Cracks in rod ends and eyes are checked first when the cylinder has been shock loaded. Magnaflux inspection shows a surface crack that is invisible to the eye.

Repair or make new

Worn pin bores and seal surfaces can often be built back up and machined to size, using metal spray, a sleeve or weld. When a rod, gland or piston is too far gone, we machine a new one from your sample or drawing, in the steel or bronze the original used.

The rule of thumb is the same as for any worn part: repair when the part is sound and the wear is local, make new when the damage runs through it. Our guide on repair or replace goes through that decision.

Talking it through before it moves

Cylinders are heavy and awkward to ship, so start with photos and a call. Tell us what the machine does, where the oil is leaking and whether the rod looks bent when it is extended. Many decisions about repair or new parts can be made from that picture, and the shop is at 4812 Longley Ln in Reno when the cylinder or its parts are ready to come in.

What to send

Machine make and model, the cylinder's bore, rod diameter, stroke and mounting style as closely as you can read them, and photos of the rod, the gland and each end. If the cylinder is off the machine, a photo of the whole thing on a bench with a tape measure beside it is ideal.

  1. Photograph the damage and the whole cylinder.
  2. Note the machine and what the cylinder does.
  3. Send it with the quote request or call (775) 359-5570.
  4. We review it and respond with questions or a prompt estimate.

Hydraulic cylinder repair questions

Still have a question? Call (775) 359-5570, Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Can you make a new rod or gland?

Yes. Machining new parts is part of our hydraulic repair work. Send the old part or a drawing with the sizes.

Do I need to bring the whole cylinder?

Not always. If a single part is damaged, you can send just that part, and photos help us decide before anything is moved.
