What does 96 inch OD mean for your part?

OD is outside diameter. A 96 inch capacity means a round part up to 8 feet across can sit on the machine and turn. Height, weight and the way the part clamps all matter as well, so the quickest way to know is to send the largest diameter, the overall height and a photo. Large round work such as housings, rings, flanges and hubs is turned on our large lathes.

When large turning is the right repair

A housing bore that has worn oversize, a seal surface that is grooved, or a face that has been hammered out of flat can often be saved instead of replaced. The usual path is to build the worn area back up, by metal spray, a sleeve or welding, then turn it back to the original size so the bearing or seal fits as it should.

For new work, large turning starts from bar, plate, a forging or a fabricated blank. We work from your specifications, drawings or samples, and we can also assist you in designing your part if you only have the old one or a rough sketch.

  • Worn or oversize bearing bores in large housings
  • Seal surfaces and faces that leak or no longer seat
  • Replacement rings, spacers and flanges with no drawing on file
  • New parts made to a print

What to send with a large-part quote

Large parts are expensive to move, so a little information up front saves a trip. Measure the largest outside diameter, the overall height and the bore you care about, and note the material if you know it. Photos from the top, the side and close to any worn area help us see how the part will clamp and what has to be cut.

If the part is still on the machine, a photo of it in place and the make and model of the equipment are useful. Attach everything to the quote request, or call the shop and talk it through first.

  1. Measure the outside diameter, the height and the key bore or face.
  2. Take photos of the whole part and close-ups of the worn or damaged area.
  3. Attach the drawing if there is one, plus the photos, to the quote request.
  4. We review it during shop hours and call or email with questions or a prompt estimate.

Lathe turning to 96 inch OD questions

Still have a question? Call (775) 359-5570, Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

What is the largest diameter you can turn?

Our lathes turn parts up to 96 inches in outside diameter. For anything near that size, send the diameter, the height and a photo so we can confirm the setup.

Can you turn a worn housing back to its original size?

Often, yes. The worn area is built back up by metal spray, a sleeve or welding and then turned back to the original size. Which method fits depends on the part and the load it carries.

Do I need a drawing?

No. We work from your specifications, drawings or samples. If all you have is the worn part, we can measure it, and we can also assist you in designing the part.
